Next time you are with a small group of people, ask them what they are thankful for today. Chances are, the people in your group will have trouble coming up with something to be thankful for. I have observed that in these instances, people begin to search for something that was utterly, fantastic to share. Which leaves most people with nothing much to say.
All of us have many things to be thankful for each day, but we have come to take these blessings for granted. When was the last time you were truly thankful for things such as medicines, transportation, clean water, indoor plumbing, air travel, your job, and the list could go on and on.
I love it when big things happen that I can rejoice about; a new house, a promotion at work, a friend comes home from the hospital, or I find extra money I didn’t realize I had. But, I should be equally thankful for the things that are not out of the ordinary.
Here is just a short list of things that I realize I take for granted:
-
Having a full time job.
-
Transportation back and forth to work
-
A roof over my head.
-
Being able to choose what kind of food I want for dinner.
-
Being able to go out for dinner.
-
Having more than one pair of shoes.
-
Having friends to spend time with.
-
Netflix and other entertainment
-
Owning a cell phone
-
Clean clothes
If you were to sit down and make a list, of things you take for granted, what would it look like. Maybe you should take a little time and work on such a list. All of us are more blessed than we realize. I often tell people, “I am the most blessed person I know.” From time to time, I stop and take inventory. I work on a list like the one above. It helps me to realize just how good God is to me.
It’s the little things we take for granted, but those little things really add up to make a great life.
