Billy Graham is probably the most recognizable name in the Christian faith. He has lead numerous crusades all around the world and seen tens of thousands come to faith in Christ as a result of his work. He has also been a spiritual advisor to multiple Presidents and has long been one of the most trusted men in America.
The following prayer was written by Billy Graham during the National Day of Prayer Observance in 2001.
Our Father and Our God, we praise You for Your goodness to our nation, giving us blessings far beyond what we deserve.
Yet we know all is not right with America. We deeply need a moral and spiritual renewal to help us meet the many problems we face.
Convict us of sin.
Help us to turn to You in repentance and faith.
Set our feet on the path of Your righteousness and peace.
We pray today for our nation’s leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to do it.
You have said, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” May this be a new era for America, as we humble ourselves and acknowledge You alone as our Savior and Lord.
This we pray in Your holy name, Amen.
As a nation we are deep in the throws of the political season as men and women are now pulling out all the stops to try and clinch the most powerful position in all the world. President of the United States.
Each of these candidates has their own platform. There are some similarities and there are some striking differences. Without fail, every candidate is eager to tell us why they are the most qualified and why their ideas are best. I want to remind us as American citizens that we have a great privilege in being able to vote and elect our leaders. I hope every American exercises this opportunity in the months to come.
I also want to remind us that our future is not held in the hands of any one individual. Our future as a nation rests in the hands of God above. Our problems in America have been labeled economic, social, racial, and a slew of other adjectives. These are only symptoms of the true problem. The problem that we have is a spiritual problem. It is SIN.
We can elect the most articulate, most educated, most compassionate, most conservative, most progressive, and even the most blunt candidate and still not address the most pressing issue America faces. We have a spiritual problem that only God can address.
As Reverend Graham prays, we too must fervently pray that God will convict our nation of sin.
Then we must go to the polls and elect leaders that will lead us in a way that is pleasing to God.
And finally, we must continue to pray for all our leaders, whether we voted for them or not, that God would give them wisdom to know what is right and the courage to do it.
