When we stop to pray we are not just having a conversation with our next door neighbor. We are talking with and listening to the one that created the very earth that we walk on. Not only that, he created the sun, the stars, the moon, the universe, the oceans, the trees, the mountains, beautiful flowers, fish, birds, animals, volcanoes, waterfalls, and every human being throughout all history.
He is a God that is all knowing, all seeing, and and always present. Nothing takes him by surprise, he sees what is done in secret, and he is not limited by time or space. He holds the past, present, and future in his hands.
As Jesus taught his disciples how to pray he began with these words.
Luke 11:2a…Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. (NKJV)
Jesus was teaching his disciples to reverence and honor the one to whom they were praying. A heart of worship is the only posture for the created to view the creator. After all, God is infinite and we are finite; God is holy and we are sinful; God is powerful and we are weak; God is love we are apathetic; God is truthful we are deceivers; God is faithful we are complacent.
Let us begin today by pausing to remind ourselves about the eternal qualities of the God we are praying to. It is important to begin every prayer with a posture of reverence.
