The statistics that have been shared over the past ten years show that an alarming number of children in America go to bed each night without a father present in their home. This leaves a huge burden for mothers to carry.
Each time my wife goes on a business trip it gives me an increased appreciation for what single parents go through. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to earn a living and try and meet all the demands of our household. I dare say that no one would be where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be there. And, my sanity would be hanging on by a thread all day every day.
Parents are admonished in scripture to train their children in the ways of the Lord. Read this verse from the book of Proverbs:
Proverbs 22:6…Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Single parents, in particularly the growing number of single moms in our society, must struggle immensely to train their children in the ways of the Lord. When you barely have time to breathe it is overwhelming to muster the necessary time and energy to teach and guide children properly. Many single parents do a noble job but I am sure if you asked them they would gladly accept help.
Children are close to the heart of God. If we would like to move the heart of God, and experience God as he delights in our efforts, then we can begin investing in a mentoring relationship with a young boy or girl.
Everyone of us know someone that is a single parent. Why not reach out to them and see if you can take their child for ice cream or to a movie. This can be the beginning of a very rewarding relationship for you and the child or teenager. Not to mention, you will be helping lighten a huge burden for a loving parent.
As a qualifier, sometimes my wife and I have a difficult time guiding our children and we are a team. We have a good marriage and we have good kids, yet the challenges of raising children can be difficult for the best of families. Don’t be backwards about reaching out to any young boy or girl God opens a door for you to share your life with.
