Message In A Minute: Let It Snow

Years ago, when my children were very young, my family visited my Aunt and Uncle’s house for Christmas.

My Aunt and Uncle have always been great with children. This particular time, my kids happened to find some styrofoam around the packaging of one of the opened Christmas gifts. Without my wife and I noticing, our children began to make a mess.

When we realized it, we apologized and started to help our kids clean up the mess. But my Aunt and Uncle had a better perspective. In fact, my Uncle helped them make more of a mess.

My Uncle and the kids pretended it was snowing inside the house. There were small bits of styrofoam all over the carpet. The kids were covered in white and having the time of their lives. It was quite a scene.

Years later, our kids still talk about how much fun they had that morning.

As relatively new parents, my wife and I were worried about the mess. But somehow, my Aunt and Uncle knew moments of delight turn into memories that last. We were focused on the debris that would have to be cleaned up, but my Aunt and Uncle were focused on the elation each child was demonstrating.

Make sure you find wonder in the moments. Don’t let worry and stress overshadow the blessings in the present. God is always at work.

Most mistakes won’t derail you. Many circumstances we view as messes, can be seen in a different light. Best of all, God’s grace can make things right, even if the mess is overwhelming.

There will be big messes in life. There are times to be focused on the aftermath. But, those times are rare.

Don’t miss the wonder in the moment, it may turn into a lasting, joy-filled memory.

Celebrate the moment.

Let it snow.

Message In A Minute: Danny’s Strength

Danny was one of the strongest men I ever knew.

He wasn’t physically imposing, his personality didn’t take over a room, he didn’t demand anything from anyone.

But, he exuded joy.

He never met a stranger, because the word “stranger” didn’t make since to him. He was an instant friend with everyone. He was a faithful friend to many. He listened with compassion, questioned with curiosity, and spoke with sincerity.

He made you laugh because he was funny, he made you smile because he was full of joy, he made you feel important, because to him, you were.

There is a Bible verse that says “…the joy of the Lord is our strength.”

Another Bible verse from hundreds of years later says about Jesus, “For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross…”

These verses deserve way more time than I can give them here, but understand this.

Jesus saw you through the cross.
He endured it for you.

You are His joy. You were worth it all.

If you know Him, He is the source of your joy.

That joy of the lord, is your strength, it allows you to press forward, persevere, and overcome.

That kind of joy gives you a new way to see.

You see through the pain to the healing
You see through doubt to assurance
You see through the rebellion to the prodigal coming home.
You see through all that life throws at you, to the moment you will meet Jesus face to face.

The Joy of the Lord is our strength.

Danny was a Christ follower, he walked close with Jesus. Danny shared grace, practiced service, and demonstrated love. The joy of the Lord was evident in his life. That joy was Danny’s strength.

If joy equals strength. Danny was one of the strongest men, I ever knew.

I hope you get to know someone like Danny. More than that, I hope we all become more like Danny.

Most of all, I hope the joy of the Lord will always be your strength.

Message In A Minute: Celebrate On The Way

I helped out at a church 90 miles from my home for a while.

I listened to lots of podcasts, music, and audio books during the long drive to and from the church.

A couple of days every week, I would see a gentleman standing on the side of the rode near a rest area. This special needs man would stand and beckon anyone, but especially truck drivers to blast their horn. His care giver would sit in a car nearby to watch over him while he pleaded with the drivers.

I wish you could’ve seen this man celebrate when the horns would sound. He would dance and clap like he won the lottery.

He enjoyed it more than I could explain, but I grew to enjoy it myself. I would hold my horn down as long as I could see him.

His dancing was infectious, his celebration was inspiring, and his ability to find joy in the simple things brings a smile to my face even while I’m writing this.

Find ways to bring joy to those around you.

But just as important, let those same people fill you with joy.

After all, they are God’s handiwork, don’t let them pass you by without celebrating.

28 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE GOD | #23: GIVE GENEROUSLY

28 Ways To Experience God Many people do not realize it but the old adage that says, “It is better to give than receive,” is very much true.  If all we do is go through life with a consuming mindset we run the risk of never being satisfied.  Our hearts will yearn for more and more in hopes that the next new thing will renew our sense of joy.

The problem with a consumers mindset is that it leads us to crave bigger, better, and newer.  And, the feelings that bigger, better, newer invoke are only temporary.  The feeling is fleeting. Continue reading

28 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE GOD | #8: JOY

28 WaysWe often mistake happiness with joy.

Biblically speaking, happiness is a temporary feeling, joy is a permanent position. We are prone to fall for the short term emotion, and that usually keeps us from growing.

Happiness will get us through a day or two, Joy will get us through anything. Happiness can be taken from you, Joy refuses to leave. Continue reading
